Is Chiropractic Treatment Effective for Damaged Discs?

If you're dealing with back pain caused by disc issues, chiropractic care may offer relief—and potentially help you avoid surgery.
Understanding the Role of Spinal Discs
Spinal discs are soft, gel-like cushions between the vertebrae that act as shock absorbers. They allow your spine to move smoothly while protecting the bones from grinding against each other. Each disc has a soft inner core and a tough outer shell.
Over time, or due to injury, these discs can become damaged. Common types of disc issues include:
- Herniated Discs: This occurs when the disc’s inner gel pushes through a tear in the outer layer. The protrusion can press on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness.
- Bulging Discs: In this case, the disc bulges outward without a full rupture. Symptoms are similar to those of a herniated disc but tend to be milder.
- Degenerative Disc Disease: With age, discs may dry out, become thinner, and lose their cushioning ability. This wear-and-tear can affect discs in both the neck and back, leading to chronic pain and nerve-related symptoms.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help
Chiropractors offer a variety of non-invasive treatments aimed at reducing pain and improving disc health:
- Spinal Adjustments: Also known as spinal manipulation, these realign the vertebrae to reduce nerve pressure and inflammation. A 2022 BMJ Open study found that spinal manipulation significantly reduced the need for surgery in patients with herniated discs or compressed nerves.
- Flexion-Distraction Therapy: This technique gently stretches the spine using a specially designed table. The increased space between vertebrae helps bulging or herniated discs retract and improves circulation for better healing.
- Spinal Decompression Therapy: Using motorized traction, this method creates negative pressure in the spine to draw the disc material back into place. A 2024 study in the Journal of Chiropractic reported a 29.5% reduction in disc herniation size and 90% symptom improvement after two months of treatment
