Neck and Upper Back Pain: Causes, Symptoms and Solutions
Neck and upper back pain are common problems, usually caused by a mix of factors such as injury, poor posture, stress, chiropractic subluxations, and disc problems. Because the neck is both highly flexible and relatively unstable, it’s especially vulnerable. It supports your 14–16 pound head with only small muscles and ligaments—like balancing a bowling ball on a stick with elastic bands. Even minor strain can throw off this balance and lead to pain.
Neck problems can contribute to:
• Headaches
• TMJ (jaw pain)
• Ringing in the ears
• Ear problems (otitis media in children)
• Muscle spasms
• Limited mobility
• Chronic tightness in the shoulders and upper back
Common Causes of Neck and Upper Back Pain
1. Injuries The most frequent neck injury is whiplash, caused by sudden movement of the head. This can damage muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue. Symptoms may take weeks or months to appear, which is why many people ignore them. Studies show half of whiplash sufferers still experience symptoms years later. Even if you feel fine after an accident, it’s important to get checked by a chiropractor.
2. Poor Posture Poor posture is a leading cause of chronic neck and upper back pain. Common examples include sitting hunched over a computer or reading in bed with your neck bent forward.
• Keep your head in a neutral position
• Avoid bending or hunching forward for long periods
• Support your back while sitting
• Keep your knees slightly lower than your hips
• Rest your arms when possible
3. Subluxations (Spinal Misalignments) Misalignments in the neck and upper back are common and often occur at the base of the skull, mid-neck, where the neck meets the upper back, or in the mid-thoracic spine. Signs include uneven shoulders, a tilted head, or forward head posture (FHP), common in people who use computers for long periods.
4. Stress Stress often causes unconscious muscle tightening in the neck, shoulders, and back, leading to chronic discomfort. The trapezius muscle is most often affected.
• Regular exercise
• Deep breathing techniques
• Chiropractic adjustments to release tension
5. Disc Herniations Although less common than in the lower back, cervical discs can bulge or herniate, especially after trauma like whiplash. These discs can press on nerves, causing neck pain and arm symptoms such as tingling, weakness, or numbness.
Why You Shouldn’t Ignore Neck and Upper Back Pain Neck and upper back problems rarely go away on their own—and untreated issues can worsen over time. Chiropractic care helps by restoring proper movement, correcting spinal misalignments, reducing pain and tension, and preventing long-term complications.
