Understanding and Treating Low Back Pain

The lower back is designed to handle tremendous forces, but it’s also one of the most vulnerable areas of the body. When the spine is misaligned or the supporting muscles are weak, even simple actions—like lifting a grocery bag or bending to tie your shoes—can trigger injury.

Back pain is one of the most common health complaints. In fact, about 80% of people will experience it at some point in their lives. It is the second leading reason for visits to the doctor, surpassed only by upper respiratory infections. Each year, more than half of all adults report suffering from low back pain, and over 10% experience recurring flare-ups.
Why the Lower Back Is Susceptible Like the neck, the lower back is highly mobile but relatively unstable compared to the thoracic spine, which is reinforced by the rib cage. This mobility allows us to bend, twist, and move freely, but it also increases the risk of strain and injury. While professional athletes and powerlifters can lift hundreds of pounds safely, an unbalanced spine or weakened muscles can make something as minor as bending to pet the dog a painful experience.
For years, it was believed that back pain would simply resolve on its own. However, research now shows that untreated back pain often returns—and may become chronic. That’s why it’s important to address back pain early and seek professional care, especially if the pain keeps coming back.

Common Causes of Low Back Pain Low back pain can arise from many different conditions, ranging from minor muscle strains to more serious medical issues. Some common causes include:

- Subluxations: Misaligned vertebrae disrupt normal spinal movement and can cause significant inflammation and pain, especially in the lower spine. Chiropractic adjustments often bring quick relief. Disc Herniations: A bulging or herniated disc doesn’t always cause pain, but when it does, it can be severe and radiate to other parts of the body. While full healing is rare, chiropractic care can help slow further damage and manage symptoms. - Sprains, Strains, and Spasms: Weekend warriors who suddenly push their bodies too hard often suffer from muscle or ligament injuries that lead to swelling, stiffness, and painful spasms. - Stress: Chronic stress increases blood pressure, releases stress hormones, and causes muscle tension. Over time, this leads to soreness, weakness, and painful trigger points in the back. - Other Conditions: Arthritis, poor posture, obesity, kidney stones, infections, and even blood clots can all contribute to lower back pain. Because some causes are serious if left untreated, getting a professional diagnosis is essential.

Chiropractic Care for Back Pain Chiropractic treatment focuses on restoring proper motion and alignment to the spine. By correcting misalignments in the lower back and pelvis, chiropractors address the root of the problem rather than just masking the symptoms.

Studies consistently show that chiropractic care is one of the most effective and affordable treatments for low back pain, with better long-term results than medication, rest, or other conventional approaches. While pain relievers and muscle relaxants may provide temporary relief, only chiropractic care corrects the underlying spinal dysfunction.
